Dusty phone speaker grille:
shake it, don’t poke it

Pocket lint, makeup and skin oil slowly clog the grille. The speaker gets quieter and the highs go dull first, and because it happens slowly, most people don’t notice.

Brushing it out

Apple’s troubleshooting page says to gently brush debris from the speaker openings with a small, soft-bristled, non-metallic brush, after unplugging cables and turning the phone off. A new soft toothbrush or makeup brush works. Brush across the openings in one direction rather than pressing into them.

Vibrate it loose first

Shaking the membrane before you brush loosens stuck dust, so you need less scrubbing. In the Android app SonicKit:

1

Pick a mode on the Dust tab

Run Full sweep (40 Hz to 18 kHz) to shake the whole grille, then finish with Fine dust (6 to 16 kHz). Deep shake is a 200 to 2000 Hz square wave for dust that clings.

2

Speaker down, then brush

Choose 15, 30 or 60 seconds. When it’s done, SonicKit reminds you to give the grille a light brush.

Burst shake and Ultra fine unlock forever after one ad, and 3 and 5 minute runs unlock for 24 hours after one ad. The three basic modes need no ads.

Compare the speaker response

Run the Speaker measurement on the Measure tab before and after cleaning to see whether the high end came back. If “The high end is weak” goes away, it worked.

FAQ

How often should I clean it?

There’s no set schedule. Do it when the speaker sounds quieter, or after a trip to the beach or a dusty site.

It buzzes. Is that dust?

If it buzzes on one particular pitch during the dust sweep, the speaker may need service. See how to tell the causes apart.
