If you hit a parked car
Almost every jurisdiction requires you to stop and leave your details. In California, for example, Vehicle Code 20002 requires you to locate the owner or leave a written note with your name and address. In the UK, the Road Traffic Act 1988 requires you to stop and give your details, or report to the police within 24 hours. In Korea, leaving a damaged parked car without giving your details carries a fine, including in parking lots, since June 2017.
What to record when you park
| Record | Why |
|---|---|
| Location (level and zone) | Narrows a CCTV request at the parking office |
| Time you parked | The window to search in dashcam or CCTV footage |
| Photo showing gaps to the cars beside you | Shows how tight the space was and that you were inside the lines |
| Existing scratches | Separates old damage from new (take one set at home) |
If you find damage
- Before moving the car, photograph the damage, neighboring cars and the space number.
- If your dashcam records while parked, back up the footage first so it is not overwritten.
- Ask the parking office to check CCTV for your spot and time window. Footage is kept for a limited time, so ask quickly.
- If the other driver cannot be identified, report to the police and ask your insurer about your options.
Recording it in the app

One photo when you arrive
In Parking Spot Memo, take a photo showing your car and the space number. The level, zone and Parked at time are saved with it.

Find the time window later
Records are listed newest first, so even days later you can look up which lot you used and when.
The app keeps its photos in its own folder, and deleting a record deletes its photo. Keep any photos you may need for a claim in your camera roll as well.
The photos in the screenshots are placeholder images used to show the app’s screens.
FAQ
Is an app record legal evidence?
That depends on the case, and the app guarantees nothing of the kind. Use it to narrow time and place; dashcam and CCTV footage are the main evidence.
I scratched a car and the owner isn’t around. What now?
Leave a note with your name and contact details and, where required, report it to the police or the parking office.
