Zones that are almost always off-limits
| Zone | Why | Typical rule (varies by place) |
|---|---|---|
| Fire hydrant | Fire crews need hose access | A set distance, e.g. 15 feet in California (Vehicle Code 22514) |
| Intersection corner | Sight lines for turning drivers | A set distance from the corner |
| Bus stop | Buses must pull in to the curb | Marked bay or distance from the sign |
| Crosswalk | Pedestrian crossing | On or near the crossing and stop line |
| Sidewalk | Wheelchairs and strollers | Any wheel on the sidewalk |
| School zone | Children crossing | Often higher fines during posted hours |
Distances and fines are set locally. Painted curbs, signs and local regulations are the final word.
Example: Korea’s resident reporting
In Korea, anyone can report a car in one of six zones (hydrant within 5 m, intersection corner within 5 m, bus stop within 10 m, crosswalk, school zone, sidewalk) through the government Safety Report app with two photos taken from the same spot at least one minute apart. Since August 2023 the one-minute standard has applied nationwide. Fines for passenger cars are 80,000 won at hydrants, 120,000 won in school zones and 40,000 won elsewhere. “Back within a minute” is not a defense; a minute is all the report needs.
Checks before you leave the car
- Is there a hydrant or fire department connection within a few meters of either bumper?
- Is the curb painted red or yellow?
- Is any wheel on the sidewalk?
- Are you blocking a driveway or garage entrance?
A parking “ticket” that arrives by text with a QR code may be a scam. See how to check a QR code’s address before opening it.
Recording it in the app

Photograph how you parked
When you park on an unfamiliar street, take the Parking Spot Memo photo wide enough to show nearby signs and the curb. It records how you parked as well as where.
Street name in Zone
Street parking has no floor, so put the street name or building number in Zone / Number.

FAQ
How far from a hydrant is far enough?
It depends on where you are. California uses 15 feet and Korea 5 meters, for example. Follow local signs and rules.
Can I stop with hazard lights on?
Hazard lights do not make a no-parking zone legal anywhere covered here.
