How name games compute a score
Most name games turn letters into numbers and then fold them down. A classic paper version from Korea works like this:
- Write the two names letter by letter, alternating between them.
- Write a number under each letter (in Korea, its stroke count).
- Add each pair of neighbours and keep only the last digit, again and again, until two digits remain.
- Read the final two digits as a percentage.
Letter-counting games and many online love calculators follow a similar pattern of counting, combining and folding.
Why order changes the result
When the alternating order flips, different numbers end up next to each other, and repeated addition magnifies the difference. These methods are asymmetric: “A with B” and “B with A” are different calculations. Hence the classic “I got 80 but you got 40” argument.
| Method | Same input again | Order |
|---|---|---|
| Paper name game | Depends on how you count | Swapping changes it |
| Random score app | May change each time | Varies |
| Symmetric match | Always the same | Doesn’t matter |
A match where order doesn’t matter
Even for fun, a score that doesn’t depend on who typed first causes fewer hurt feelings. A calculation that gives the same value when you swap the inputs is called symmetric.
The constellation match in the app
The sample name and journal text in these screenshots were typed in Korean; the app itself runs fully in English.

Enter two people
On the Match tab of My Constellation, enter a name and date of birth for First person and Second person. First person is pre-filled with what you entered on the first tab. The arrow button in the middle swaps the two, and the result stays exactly the same.
Read the result
You get a score, one of five levels (Distant Skies, Passing Skies, Touching Skies, Overlapping Skies, One Sky), how your elements relate, the traits you share, your guardian stars and “the constellation your two skies make together.”
FAQ
If I enter the same two people again, will the score change?
No. The same names and birth dates always give the same score. See the input rules.
Does a low score mean we aren’t compatible?
No. It is a number for fun, computed from names and dates, and has nothing to do with a real relationship.
