Should you wait for New Year
to quit smoking?

January 1 is a popular day to quit, and also the morning after a big night. What is happening that week matters more than how symbolic the date is.

Five tests for a quit date

  1. Not too far away — Smokefree.gov says it’s fine to take a few days to prepare and pick a date that makes sense for you. Months away and the resolve fades.
  2. A quiet first three days — withdrawal peaks in days 2 to 3, so avoid deadlines, parties and travel then.
  3. A routine change — a move, new job or return from vacation breaks smoking cues along with the routine.
  4. Support available — book a quitline call or stop smoking service appointment near the date.
  5. Easy to remember — a symbolic date is a bonus only if it passes the first four.
This guide is general information about tracking and habits, not medical advice. For stop-smoking medicines or nicotine products, severe withdrawal, existing health conditions or pregnancy, talk to a doctor, pharmacist or a stop smoking service. The first cut

At the end of your quit day, slide the scissors to cut the first cigarette. Day 1 fills in and the next milestone, 3 days, appears. Add one line in the memo about why you are quitting to reread on hard days.

The app’s screenshots show sample amounts in Korean won (4,500 per pack is the app default), and the Settings sheet title is shown in Korean in the current English version. Enter your own local pack price; the calculation works the same in any currency.

FAQ

Cut down first or stop all at once?

It depends on the person. A quitline or stop smoking service can advise based on how much you smoke and past attempts.

I missed my date.

Move it to tomorrow. Don’t wait for the next symbolic day.
