Why days 2 and 3 are hardest
The MSD Manual describes nicotine withdrawal as typically most intense in the first 2 to 3 days and easing within 2 to 4 weeks. Smokefree.gov, run by the US National Cancer Institute, notes the first week is when people are most likely to slip. Irritability, poor focus and strong urges cluster here even as your body improves.
A 72-hour plan
- Day 1 morning — clear cigarettes, lighters and ashtrays from home, car and bags. Decide what you will do at the time you usually had your first cigarette (shower, walk, glass of water).
- Day 1 afternoon — replace each linked moment (after meals, with coffee, on the commute) with something else. Skip drinks for these three days (why alcohol matters).
- Days 2 and 3 — log each urge and let it pass. The goal is not “can I last forever” but “just this one”.
- Save help numbers now — 1-800-QUIT-NOW in the US, 0300 123 1044 in England, or your local quitline.
Logging the first three days

Cut one cigarette a day
Slide the scissors all the way across on the Record tab and the day is saved as smoke-free. For these three days, make it the last thing you do before bed.
Craving +1 each time
“Craving +1” adds one to the day’s count. Seeing day three lower than day one turns “it gets easier” into a number. Use the memo to note the hardest moment.
Watch the 3-day milestone
Milestones run Day 1, 3 days, 1 week, 2 weeks, 1 month and onward. “Next milestone” at the bottom of the Record tab shows how close you are.
The app’s screenshots show sample amounts in Korean won (4,500 per pack is the app default), and the Settings sheet title is shown in Korean in the current English version. Enter your own local pack price; the calculation works the same in any currency.
FAQ
What if withdrawal feels unbearable?
Don’t tough it out alone. A quitline, stop smoking service or doctor can help, and any medicines or nicotine products should be chosen with a professional.
Am I done after three days?
You are past the peak, not the finish. Withdrawal usually eases over 2 to 4 weeks, and drinks or stress can trigger urges much later.
