This winter Winnipeg and Toronto show the same time, while Vancouver and Seattle are an hour apart.
How world clocks know
Phones and world clock apps calculate times from the rules in the IANA time zone database (tz database). A new release comes out whenever a country changes its rules; in 2026 alone there were five between March and the end of September. New rules only reach you when your phone’s OS or the app is updated, so right after an announcement two devices can disagree by an hour.
How to check
- When booking with someone in a place that just changed, ask once what their local time is right now.
- Keep your phone’s OS and your world clock app up to date.
- For the first meeting after a change date, put the local time in the message as well.
In the app
Day and night on the map
The Map tab of World Time Board shows the live day/night line, pins for your cities and a day-or-night list. It is also a quick way to see how far official time sits from where the sun actually is.
Cross-check the offset
Compare the UTC offset on the Board tab’s city card with the official local announcement. All calculations run on the device without the internet, so for places that changed, check again after the app updates.
Vancouver, Calgary, Casablanca and Almaty are built in; for places like Asunción or Winnipeg, open the Zone pack (one ad) and search by time zone ID.
FAQ
Is the US West Coast going permanent too?
British Columbia’s announcement mentions Washington, Oregon and California pursuing similar laws, but as of October 2026 the US side still falls back on 1 November.
Didn’t Morocco change for Ramadan?
It used to run on UTC+1 and drop to UTC+0 during Ramadan. From 20 September 2026 it stays on UTC+0.
