Where phone level errors come from
- The sensor — tilt is calculated from the phone’s accelerometer, and individual phones can read slightly off.
- The camera bump — laid on its back, the raised camera lifts one end. A flat surface reads as tilted.
- The case — uneven cases or raised corner bumpers tip the phone when it stands on an edge.
- Your hand — touching the phone during a reading makes it wander.
The 180° flip test
This is the reversal test used to check spirit levels.
- Lay the phone screen-up on a surface that looks flat and read the value once it settles.
- Turn the phone 180 degrees flat on the same spot (swap top and bottom) and read again.
- Compare.
| Result | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Both near 0° | Surface and phone are both fine |
| Same size, direction flips | The surface is tilted; the phone is fine |
| Leans the same way after turning | Error on the phone side (sensor, camera bump, case) |
The surface tilt is half the difference between the two readings; the phone’s own offset sits near their average. Level makers explain it the same way: the real error is half the difference between the readings.
Doing it in the app
Steps in the Android app "Level Camera".

Bubble only
In Capture settings, turn on Bubble and turn off Level. Lying screen-up, the bubble position and the number show how far the phone is from parallel to the ground.
Compare the bubble before and after
Note which side of the screen the bubble sits on before and after turning. If it moves to the opposite side, the surface is tilted. If it stays on the same side of the screen, the error is in the phone. If you suspect the camera bump, set the phone on a thin book so the bump hangs off the edge and test again.
Jobs not to trust a phone with
| Job | Why |
|---|---|
| Installing shelves, counters, doors | Load-bearing, and errors add up |
| Judging drainage or ramp slopes | There are required values to meet |
| Floor defect claims or disputes | Needs proper instruments and methods |
Good spirit levels are typically rated to about 0.5 mm per meter (about 0.03°). Think of a phone level as a tool for visible tilt: photos and picture frames.
FAQ
Does this work standing up too?
The upright level line is hard to read once you turn the phone around, since the screen then faces away. If you use it upright a lot, run the flat test above first to confirm the phone-side error is small.
Is it more accurate without the case?
With a case that has raised corners, yes. Run the test in the same spot with and without the case and you will see the difference.
