Hanging a frame level:
string, level or phone

Frames hung by eye are almost always slightly off, because we line them up with a sloped ceiling line or baseboard. Measure once before you hang, once after.

String and weightChecks verticals with no toolsHorizontal needs another step
Spirit levelMost accurate; a must for shelvesMany homes do not have one
SmartphoneAlways with you; shows degreesNot as accurate as a tool

For a frame on a single nail, a phone is often enough. For a shelf that will hold books or a heavy mirror, check with a spirit level. To see what an angle means in length, use the tilt conversion table.

Standing the phone on the frame

The level line in the Android app "Level Camera" measures left-right tilt with the phone standing upright.

Level only, phone upright

In Capture settings, turn on Level only. Stand the phone upright in portrait with its bottom edge on the top of the frame. Just steady it against the wall with a fingertip; pressing changes the reading.

Turn the frame until it goes green

Nudge the frame in the direction that makes the number smaller. With the tolerance tightened to about ±0.5°, green means quite level. A short buzz tells you when you are there.

A rounded bottom edge or a case with raised bumpers throws the reading off. Take the case off, or lay a ruler on the frame and stand the phone on that.

Checking high frames with a photo

You cannot put a phone on a frame above a staircase. Instead, take a level photo of it, straight on, and look at the frame in the photo.

  1. Stand in front of the frame, as close to its height as you can (shooting steeply upward turns its edges into a trapezoid).
  2. Shoot when the level turns green.
  3. Compare the top edge of the frame with a horizontal grid line. The photo is level, so if the edge and the grid disagree, the frame is tilted.

FAQ

Can I do this with a TV or a mirror?

If you can stand the phone on top, it works as a check. Wall bracket installation itself should be checked with a spirit level.

I want to check my phone first.

Run the 180° flip test to confirm the phone-side error is small.
