Turning sand into glass:
fire is not enough

Glass is mostly sand (silica). But a campfire is nowhere near hot enough to melt it. The same is true inside the sandbox: setting sand on fire will not give you glass.

How real glass is made

Window and bottle glass is mainly silicon dioxide from sand. Pure silica melts at a very high temperature, so glassworks mix in a flux such as soda ash, plus limestone, to lower the melting point before melting the batch in a large furnace. Cooled before crystals can form, the melt becomes clear glass.

StageWhat happens
Raw materialsSilica sand + flux (soda ash etc.) + limestone
MeltingFully melted in a furnace at high temperature
Forming and coolingBlown or poured into shape, then cooled slowly

Melting sand at home is dangerous and practically impossible. If you want to see the idea, a game is enough.

Glass made by nature

Nature sometimes makes sand into glass too. When lightning strikes sand, the sudden heat can melt it into hollow glassy tubes called fulgurites. Obsidian, formed when thick magma cools fast, is natural glass whose crystals never had time to grow. In both cases the key is extreme heat and fast cooling.

1

Pour lava onto sand

In Sandlab, pile up Sand and pour Lava on top of it or next to it. Sand grains touching the lava gradually turn into glass. It does not happen all at once; each grain has a chance per moment, so give it a few seconds.

Why fire alone does not work

The in-app Reaction guide says sand melts in "the heat of lava or fire", but in the 1.0 engine the condition that turns sand into glass is touching lava. Fire sprinkled on sand just rises and burns out. Real sand will not melt in a campfire either, so this part is actually close to reality.

3

Keep water away

Lava that touches water instantly hardens into stone and the water turns into steam. If you want glass, keep water away from the lava. Once the lava has become stone it cannot heat the sand.

What glass is good for

Property (in the game)Use
A solid that stays in place once formedA glass crust over a sand pile, like a roof
Acid cannot dissolve it (only glass and stone)A container for acid. The Tube wall preset is drawn in glass
Does not burnA divider for fire and lava experiments

Glass is a premium element, so picking it straight from the palette takes one short ad, but making it from sand and lava works from the start.

FAQ

Does glass ever turn back into sand?

Not in the game. Glass stays as a fixed solid and only disappears with the eraser or undo.

Can electricity make glass instead of lava?

Spark runs along metal, water and acid and sets things on fire, but it does not turn sand into glass. Lightning glass is not part of the game rules.
