Average life expectancy
Every country publishes life tables with life expectancy at birth. As one example, South Korea’s 2024 life table gives 83.7 years for babies born that year (80.8 for males, 86.6 for females). Check your own country’s official statistics office for its figure.
At birth vs at your age
Life expectancy at birth is how long a newborn is expected to live on average. Someone already 40 has survived the risks in between, so their age plus their remaining life expectancy usually comes out a little above the at-birth figure. Life tables list remaining life expectancy by age if you want the exact value.
Practical rules of thumb
| Purpose | Use |
|---|---|
| Whole life on one page | A round number like 85 or 90 |
| A feel for time left | Something near the average above |
| Counting visits with parents | Their age’s remaining life expectancy; 85 if unsure |
Rather than chasing precision, pick a number and leave it; a grid you keep changing loses its meaning.
Setting it in the app

The life expectancy slider
Under Set Up Your Life on the Calendar tab in Life Calendar, set life expectancy anywhere from 40 to 120. The default is 90.
Estimate my life expectancy
Not sure? "Estimate my life expectancy" asks about sex, smoking, exercise, and diet and drinking, and suggests a starting point. It roughly adjusts a published average by well-known lifestyle trends; it is not a medical prediction.
FAQ
Does changing it delete my records?
No. Only the total number of boxes and figures such as weeks left and chances left are recalculated.
The numbers make me anxious.
They are arithmetic on averages, not a forecast. The boxes ahead aren’t disappearing; they are the ones you still get to fill.
