Right-handed parents,
left-handed child: is it genetic?

Both parents are right-handed, and the toddler grabs the spoon with the left hand. Even with no left-handers in the family, this is common.

Left-handedness in numbers

ItemWhat is known
Share of peopleAbout 10 to 15% in Western countries (MedlinePlus)
HeritabilityAbout 25% from twin studies (reported with a 2024 Max Planck Institute study)
Genes involvedPerhaps up to 40, each with a small effect
Other factorsPrenatal environment and cultural influences

A large 2024 study in Nature Communications found rare variants in a gene called TUBB4B with a strong effect on left-handedness, but they account for at most about 1 in 1,000 left-handers. The researchers think most left-handedness is not caused by genetic variants.

How parents’ handedness relates

Everyday tips for left-handed kids

SituationTip
ScissorsLeft-handed scissors let the child see the cutting line.
WritingTilt the paper slightly to the right and choose smudge-resistant pens.
SeatingA seat at the left end of the table avoids bumping elbows with right-handers.
Sports and musicSome equipment comes in left-handed versions; check before buying.

The app’s handedness model

The Android app Genetic Kids Lab follows the classroom example and models handedness as right dominant, left recessive. The app’s About tab notes that real handedness is more complex. Comparing its output with the research above shows what a simple model misses.

Set Handedness and simulate

Set Handedness for both parents and tap Simulate 1,000 to see the right/left split. Two left-handed parents give 100% left-handed children in the model, which real families do not.

For learning and fun only. This guide and the app use simplified models to explain genetics concepts. They do not predict or guarantee any real child’s traits and are not a substitute for medical advice or genetic counseling. If you have concerns about health or inherited conditions, talk to a qualified professional.

FAQ

Should we switch our child to the right hand?

Handedness is thought to be shaped mostly by development rather than by genetic variants. Whether to encourage a switch is a parent’s call with the child’s comfort first; if you have concerns, talk to your pediatrician or a developmental specialist.

Is ambidexterity inherited?

Truly ambidextrous people are rare and less studied than left-handers, so there is little solid evidence either way.
