What the AVMA recommends
- ID tags with current details, an up-to-date microchip registry entry, and recent photos of your pet
- For anxious pets, talk to your vet about behavior training to reduce noise fear, or medication
- Leave pets at home, in a safe, escape-proof room or crate, when fireworks are going off
- Check your yard and walking route for fireworks debris the next day
Checklist by day
| When | What to do |
|---|---|
| Weeks before | See your vet if fear is severe; desensitization takes time |
| Days before | Check tags and microchip details, take photos, check window screens and gates |
| Daytime on the day | Finish walks and toilet breaks before the fireworks start |
| That night | Close windows and curtains, keep the usual hiding spot open, watch the door when guests come |
| Next day | Check for debris on walks; call a vet if your pet may have eaten some |
On the night
- Don’t block hiding places — if they crawl under a bed or into a closet, let them stay.
- Mask the bangs — TV or music at normal volume makes the booms less noticeable.
- Stay calm yourself — acting normally helps.

FAQ
Does comforting my dog make the fear worse?
If your pet comes to you for comfort, it is fine to give it. Just don’t hold them down or pull them out of a hiding spot.
Is it the same for cats?
Cats also hide and may try to escape through windows. Secure windows and keep hiding spots available.
