Three kinds of risk
| Risk | Example | Where to look first |
|---|---|---|
| Liability to others | You hit a pedestrian or a parked car | Home or renters policy liability section, cycling club membership |
| Your own injury | A fall on ice | Health cover, personal accident policy, travel insurance when abroad |
| Theft or damage to the bike | Bike stolen outside a shop | Home contents policy (often with limits and lock conditions) |
Where cover often hides
- Home or renters insurance — many policies include personal liability, and some cover bikes away from home only with an add-on.
- Cycling organisations — some memberships include third-party liability.
- Travel insurance — check whether cycling is covered or counted as an excluded activity, especially for long tours.
- Card benefits and employer schemes — worth one read before buying something new.
Korea: automatic city schemes
Many Korean local governments pay for citizen safety insurance that covers every registered resident automatically, and you can claim it even if you have private insurance. Whether bicycle accidents are included varies. Seoul’s city-wide scheme focuses on disasters, fires and public transport, but some districts run a separate resident bicycle insurance. Guro-gu, for example, announced in April 2026 that residents are covered wherever the accident happens, including being hit by a bicycle as a pedestrian.
| Item (Guro-gu example) | Cover |
|---|---|
| Death | 10 million won |
| Permanent disability | Up to 10 million won |
| Diagnosis and hospital stay | Lump-sum payments |
| Fines, lawyer fees, criminal settlement | Supported |
Seoul’s citizen safety insurance includes registered foreign residents and must be claimed within three years. Check your own district’s page for its details.
Before you claim
- Deadlines — every policy has one; do not wait.
- Paperwork — medical certificates, an account of what happened, photos, any police report.
- Several policies — some pay on top of each other, others share the cost; ask each insurer.
Keeping a ride record

Note the day of an accident
Daily Bike Log is not official evidence, but writing that day’s distance and a memo (place, time, what happened) helps you reconstruct events later. Your ride history also stays on the phone, and Backup / Restore in Settings keeps a copy if you change phones.
Screenshots show the app in English with sample rides; dates use the year-month-day format.
FAQ
Is a helmet required to claim?
It depends on the policy and the case. See helmet laws for where it is a legal duty.
Does riding after drinking affect cover?
Many policies treat it differently; read the exclusions. See cycling after drinking.
