Ketosis at 16 hours,
autophagy at 18?

The stage messages on a fasting timer are motivating, but no switch flips at an exact hour.

When does the metabolic switch happen?

The "metabolic switch" is the shift from using liver glycogen to relying mainly on fatty acids and ketones from fat. A 2018 review (Anton et al.) says it usually happens between 12 and 36 hours after you stop eating, depending on how much glycogen your liver held at the start and how active you are during the fast.

A big late dinner pushes it later; an active day pulls it earlier. The same 16 hours means different things for different people, and on different days.

Popular timeline vs reality

Popular claimWhat can actually be said
4–12h: burning blood sugar and glycogenBlood sugar settles and the liver draws on glycogen. Broadly fair
12–16h: fat burning startsFat use rises gradually before this; it does not start at hour 12
16–18h: ketosisKetones may start rising, but individual variation is large. 16:8 alone rarely keeps you in ketosis
18–24h: autophagy kicks inThere is little direct human evidence for a start time; most data come from animal and cell studies
This guide is general information about intermittent fasting, not medical advice. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, under 18, take diabetes medication (especially insulin or other glucose-lowering drugs), or have a history of an eating disorder, do not start fasting before talking to your doctor. The same goes if you have a chronic condition or take regular medication. Stop fasting if you feel dizzy, shaky or your heart races. This guide does not recommend extreme fasts of a day or longer.

Why autophagy is hard to measure

Autophagy is a clean-up and recycling process inside cells, so there is no simple blood test that says it has switched on. Hour counts for autophagy are mostly estimates from animal experiments or indirect markers. Fasting beyond 24 hours to chase autophagy is not recommended.

Stage messages are rough guides

Intermittent Fasting Timer shows messages by elapsed time: "Fasting started" (under 4h), "Burning blood sugar and glycogen" (4–12h), "Fat burning has kicked in" (12–16h), "Entering ketosis" (16–18h), "Autophagy is active" (18–24h) and "Extended fast phase" (24h+). These are general descriptions timed to the clock, not measurements of your body.

Your body’s signals beat the clock

Do not make the next stage message your goal. If you feel dizzy, your heart races or you are exhausted, end the fast for the day. Tapping "Stop Fasting" saves the record up to that moment.

FAQ

Should I check with a ketone meter?

It shows a ketone level, but that does not guarantee weight loss or health benefits. If you have diabetes, make any ketone-related decisions with your care team.

Is eating at 15 hours 50 minutes a waste?

Nothing dramatic happens between 15:50 and 16:00. Consistency matters more than the exact number.
