Clear PET bottles
get their own bin

Collected on their own, clear PET bottles become long fiber for clothing and bags. Mixed with colored plastic, they lose most of that value, which is why there’s a separate bin.

Since when

Separate collection of clear PET bottles started in apartment complexes nationwide on December 25, 2020 and was extended to detached and multi-family houses on December 25, 2021. Houses often have a set day for putting out clear PET and plastic film.

Four steps

  1. Empty and rinse.
  2. Peel off the label. The label goes with plastic film.
  3. Crush the bottle.
  4. Put the cap back on and drop it in the clear PET bin.

The Korea Consumer Agency’s guide says the same: colorless PET bottles go in the dedicated bin with contents and label removed, crushed, cap on.

The bin is for colorless PET bottles. Whether clear cups or food trays go in it depends on local rules.

These guides follow Korea’s national recycling guidelines from the Ministry of Environment. Collection days, drop-off spots and details differ by city, district and building, so check your district office website or building manager when in doubt. (Written October 2026.)
